Welcome! I hope you had a great summer and re-charged your educator batteries in preparation for the 2017-2018 school year. Last year, my data article series taught tips on becoming a data champion, but, just like AdvancED suggests, we should strive for continuous improvement. So this year I hope to help you become something even better – a data jedi (ooooh, ahhhhhh)! That’s right, I’m here to help make you the “Sorcerer of statistics”, the “Duke of data”, or even the “Empress of evidence-based decision-making” (talk about a resumé booster). Each month I’ll publish a new article with tips, insights, and tools to improve the way you and your school uses data.
Meet the author…
Are you wondering, “Who is this guy?” or “What does he know about data?”
Well, allow me to introduce myself…
I’m Christopher Thompson and this is my third year as the South East Education Cooperative’s Data Specialist. To sum up my role, I am responsible for collecting and analyzing data from SEEC professional learning opportunities, programs and events to 1) ensure that educators (yes, you!), and ultimately the students in our region, are receiving the support they need to be successful, and 2) that the support we provide is of high quality and impactful. Basically, it’s my job to make sure that whenever you engage/participate with the SEEC it is a valuable learning experience for you.
Last year’s Data Champion articles were a great way for me to share tips I’ve learned to help you be an effective user of data. I enjoyed it so much, I wanted to keep sharing! I recognize that data might not be the most glamorous topic, and using it may be confusing, boring, or even scary for some people. However, I am here to help dispel these negative data dispositions because it is my goal to ensure that these articles are:
- written in plain, easy to understand language
- relevant to educators
- easily integrated into practice
If they aren’t, please, please, PLEASE let me know by emailing me at Chris.Thompson@k12.nd.us with the subject line “Data Champions” and pass along your tips and feedback on how I can improve! I am writing with YOU in mind and want you to grow in your use of data (hooray growth mindset!).
I also want to hear WHAT IS ON YOUR MIND and HOW EDUCATORS ARE CURRENTLY USING DATA in hopes that we can learn together and increase our data skills collaboratively! The goal is to create articles personalized to the needs of our members and to do that, I am urging you to share your burning questions and brilliant insights regarding data use in education.
So, in an effort to practice what I preached in my first data tip “Choosing the Right Data,” I’ve created a short 4-question survey to help you share your personal or your district’s data questions with me!
In case you missed it…
The 2016-17 Data Champion article series centered heavily on general tips for effective data use and we’ve linked them below for your convenience! Catch up or refresh, but most of all enjoy…
- Choose the Right Data
- Common Data Language
- Analyze Data in a Timely Manner
- Organize Data in a User-Friendly Manner
Note: It is not required that you read these articles prior to reading this year’s articles; however, I do recommend that you read them to ensure that the data you collect is of high quality.
