2nd Annual N.D. Afterschool Summit
Afterschool Day on the Hill
Afterschool students from West Fargo, Dickinson, Jamestown, Bismarck and Grafton gathered at the ND Capitol’s Memorial Hall to educate, share and have some fun with the legislators and others visiting to show the importance of out of school time.
The student led activities included: a sea perch (underwater remote-controlled vehicles), Makey Makeys (circuits turned into robots/operation game), motor operated K’Nex cars and ferris wheel, milk rainbow (powdered milk and food coloring – chemical reaction), Mindworks as well as robotics. Their day also included visits to the Heritage Center, State Library and lunch in the Capitol Café amongst legislators.
The day kept building with excitement as they received a visit from Governor Burgum as well as an invitation from Lieutenant Governor Sanford to sit in the House and Senate balcony during session. It was an amazing opportunity for students to experience government first hand. There were a lot of young, smiling faces, one student even commented that he wants to be a representative when he grows up.
As the day concluded, there were a lot of hugs and goodbyes, expressing that they can’t wait to come back for the next legislative session.
A special thanks to Gateway to Science for being present to help support the out-of-school time initiative.
