Madison YMCA afterschool program students LOVE putting their creative skills to work.
Explore Zone: 25-30 minutes of learning, exploring and gaining self-confidence through expression.
Today’s explore zone consisted of three domains; STEM, literacy, art. Program leaders introduce the lesson through explanation and an example, and then let the students work and create for the remaining 20-25 minutes.
“I love building with legos because I like to build things that I want to have when I grow up and have lots of money”
Lego Story Starters is a collection of 20 beginnings. What will the endings look like? It is up to you. Each of the cards in this box has a tantalizing start to a story any child will want to finish. After the And then… it’s up to you to decide what happens next. And Then stories help students gain confidence in reading, express their creations through building and sharing and discover new learning methods for future education.
Legos are used in many ways at our YMCA program. The staff and kids both enjoy the Lego Challenge calendar. The calendar is on display during the morning program, which runs from 6:30-8:30AM.
“The hardest part about Legos is getting the students to stop building their creations and move onto the next activity because they are so engaged in their Lego making!” –Madison YMCA Leader
